Bybit trading bot with a stop-loss: your options explained

Nova team · · 4 min read

If you trade on Bybit and want a bot, decide one thing first: what happens when the price falls hard? A stop-loss decides that in advance. This page explains two ways to trade on Bybit with a stop-loss: Bybit's own Spot Grid bot, and Nova, the app we make. We are not neutral, so we only use facts from public pages, with a link and the date we checked them.

Option 1: Bybit's own Spot Grid bot

According to Bybit's help article How to Get Started With Spot Grid Bot on Bybit (checked on 30 October 2026):

  • You set a price range (lower and upper bound) and a number of grids. Outside the range the bot places no new orders.
  • More grids means more filled orders, and so more trading fees, as Bybit itself notes.
  • Under Advanced Settings (Optional) you can set a Stop-Loss Price: when the price reaches it, the bot is terminated and sells the base token into USDT.
  • The stop-loss price must be below the entry price and the lower price limit. There is also a take-profit price and a trailing stop based on your equity.
  • Bybit warns that, due to slippage, your final equity can differ from the exit level.

The stop-loss is optional: if you don't set one, the bot keeps running until you close it. Bybit's grid bots run on your Bybit account; there is no separate app to connect. Bybit also offers other bot types, including futures bots.

Option 2: Nova connected to your Bybit account

Nova is a trading app that connects to your own exchange account. From the Nova home page and the terms:

  • Bybit and Bybit EU are supported for live spot trading, alongside KuCoin, Bitget and HTX.
  • You connect a Bybit API key without withdrawal rights. Nova never holds your money, and 2FA is mandatory.
  • A stop-loss is mandatory. You cannot place an order without one.
  • Risk limits sit above every strategy and can only be made stricter, never looser.
  • A kill switch stops all new orders with one button (plus a confirmation).
  • Every account starts in paper mode: virtual money on live prices, so results there are simulated. Going live on Bybit is your own choice, at your own risk.
  • Plans: Free (€0, 1 exchange key), Pro (€9.99 per month) and Premium (€24.99 per month). Bybit charges its own trading fees.

Side by side

  • Stop-loss: optional in Bybit's Spot Grid; required on every order in Nova.
  • Setup: Bybit's bots are built in. Nova needs an API key from your Bybit account.
  • Bot types: Bybit offers grid bots and futures bots. Nova is spot only and offers fewer strategies.
  • Practise first: Nova starts every account in paper mode.
  • Stop everything at once: Nova's kill switch stops all new orders. With Bybit's bots you close each bot yourself.

Where to place the stop-loss

  1. Below the point where your idea no longer holds; for a grid, Bybit requires it below the lower limit of your range anyway.
  2. Not so tight that normal price swings hit it all the time.
  3. Sized so the loss is acceptable. If the loss at your stop is too large, use a smaller amount. See how to calculate your position size.

A stop-loss is a safety net, not a guarantee. In a fast market, slippage or a price gap can make the loss bigger than planned. Read more in what a stop-loss is.

How to connect Bybit to Nova safely

  1. Create a free Nova account and practise in paper mode first.
  2. On Bybit, create an API key with trading rights only. Do not give withdrawal rights.
  3. Add the key in Nova, set your risk limits and start with a small amount you can afford to lose.
  4. If you also run Bybit's own bots, make sure they don't trade the same balance as Nova.

Create a free account (paper mode). No card needed. Want to trade live on more than one exchange later? See the Pro plan.
